How to build a Vocabulary?

Vocabulary building is a long term and slow process. It can't be built overnight. So its better to start off early....How to start???

Now few common mistakes that people make (I too made this):
Trying to cram a long wordlist in alphabetical order or some even try to cram the dictionary. But at the end you cant get much out of this method. To learn a new word you must have some sentence which represents the word in context. This help in remembering the word as well as its meaning. But how to retain it? This is the very next question that comes to our mind....You need to use this word in your day to day life to make it a part of your active vocabulary.....Remembering new words is same as remembering names of people....People with whom you interact more, you easily remember their name whereas the people with whom you don't interact much it takes time to remember their name and you tend to forget their name sometimes.

So how to start??

-Word power made easy : I mentioned about this book earlier and again i would like to tell...kindly don't try to search for it on the net.

-second is www.vocabulary.com ...this website is very useful...

-read,read and read and try to derive the meaning of word from contextual usage.

-I will be uploading the vocabulary lectures on this blog.

Thats all for today. Thank you!!

Useful websites for CAT

Whenever people plan to take up CAT first and foremost question they have is where to start and what to do.Some people try to go for self study. I would like to tell them that self study in case of exam like CAT is tough job. You need a proper guidance. So it is advisable if you join coaching classes for CAT. Plz don't think that i m advertising on their behalf and receiving commission. But it is necessary due to following reasons:
- They provide you with the material that is updated and very well prepared.
- They have proper planning about covering the course in proper timings.
- They take regular test which is must for strong preparation.
- They provide you with computer labs which are necessary as CAT has gone online.

- In short they provide with all the necessary backup needed to prepare for CAT.

Few of the reputed ones are PT education, Carrier launcher, TIME , IMS ,Catalysis etc....

I have seen many people (I was one of them)...who try to search for free material on net...but its really a bad idea because you can't get any authentic stuff for free. Lots n lots of sites lure you by providing free wordlist. Wordlist is not at all useful. You cant memorize 5000-6000 odd words in the form of list. It will never work.So please stop googling for free material and wasting your time.

Still some website provide you a little amount of useful stuff...for their promotion...You can use them at least. I m providing you the link to those sites:

www.tcyonline.com
www.testfunda.com
www.learnhub.com

If you will search on google you will find tons of site by you will get getting nothing.

You should have following materials to start with your CAT prep:

What CAT really tests??

CAT is designed not to test how well you can do all those maths sums or how well you can read and comprehend the shakespear play. That will be checked in your school and board exams.

CAT tests you and following three section:
-Quantitative aptitude.
-Data interpretation (Data handling) and Logical reasoning.
-Verbal ability.

There is a myth that quantitative aptitude means maths and verbal ability means English. Fact is maths us instrumental in determining your quantitative aptitude. So its not the test of maths. It is the test of how well you can think under tremendous time pressure and deal with some arduous questions. Same goes for English and verbal ability.

In DI and LR they test you at your logical skills and also at your data interpretation skills. Data would be given to you is any form...be it a table or graph or pie chart or whatever....how well you can analyse it is the main aim behind this section.

Thats it for today!!! Have a nice day!!!
